West Indies v England - 1992 World Test Championship - 1st Round - West Indies 1st Innings

West Indies v England - 1992 World Test Championship - Round 1 - Georgetown, Guyana

The West Indies openers made a slow start, before the first England bowling change reaped instant reward, Dermott Reeve having Phil Simmons caught behind by Jack Russell for 8, leaving the score 22/1 after 8 overs.
Brian Lara then joined Haynes, and began cautiously, the pair taking the score to 56, before Haynes was bowled by an inswinger from medium pacer Pringle for 32.
At 56/2 England had an opening, but captain Richardson then joined Lara in a steadying stand of 88 for the 3rd wicket.
With the pitch offering some early turn for the spinners, Phil Tufnell was given an extended bowl.
After an expensive start, Tufnell eventually settled down, and found some assistance to bowl Richardson for 46 with a ball that turned to leave the score on 144/3.
Shortly after, England suffered a major blow, when Tufnell, the only bowler gaining assistance from the pitch, injured a muscle and had to leave the field, only returning to bowl on Day 2.
The forecast Rain interrupted the second session twice.
With Lara subdued against the seamers after an attacking start against Tufnell early on, and Arthurton struggling to get settled, progress was slow after Tea.
But by Stumps the pair had wrested the initiative in an unbroken 98* run stand, taking the score to 242/3 off 75 overs, Lara unbeaten on 123*, and Arthurton a slow but important 29*.
Rain and Bad Light had cut 15 Overs off the Day's play in all, but the West Indies would have been happy with their progress.
Lara and Athurton took the score to 260/3 next morning, before Pringle bowled Arthurton for 35 just before the New Ball was due.
The England seamers used the opening to spark a collapse, with the West Indies losing 66/7 in total, to spiral to all out for 326.
Lara was eventually out lbw to the persevering Lewis for a strangley subdued, but brilliant lone hand of 139, with 15 fours, from 234 balls and 288 minutes of batting, with none of the other batsmen reaching 50.
Curtly Ambrose made merry with his highest score for a while, a hard hitting 44, sharing a handy partnership of 36 with Walsh, but after such a strong position overnight, would be disappointed with their eventual total.
Keeper David Williams lack of batting skill, and the length of the tail, raising concerns already that the West Indies may have some weaknesses other teams can exploit.
Reeve and Pringle finished with 3 wickets apiece, both causing problems with their swing, in an improved bowling performance from England in which everyone contributed, after a tough opening day.
With the score being 321/8 at the 100 Over mark, both teams took 3 Bonus Points from the innings.
