Sri Lanka began their second innings needing 264 runs to make India bat again.
They lost Hathurasingha cheaply to Prabhakar for the 2nd time in the match, to fall under immediate pressure, but Mahanama and Gurusinha repaired the damage in an entertaining stand of 134 for the 2nd wicket at 5 an over.
With the Draw or a surprise comeback victory now an outside chance, it was a disappointment when Mahanama fell for a stroke filled 85, featuring his 2nd and 3rd sixes of the match.
This sparked a terminal decline, in which the last 8 wickets fell for 134, to leave Sri Lanka all out in their 2nd innings for 276, and India requiring just 13 runs for victory.
Gurusinha carried on gamely for a solo hand of 130 as wickets tumbled around him, and was eventually last out, but apart from Mahanama, only Ranatunga with 19 also made double figures..
Anurasiri was unable to bat, having injured himself in the field.
The Indian seamers once again shared the wickets, with Banerjee justifying his suprise selection with 3-54 to complete 5 wickets for the match.
India lost Sidhu before Wijegunawardena ended the match by being no balled for a beamer, perhaps summing up the Sri Lankan bowler's frustrations with the pitch, India winning the game by 9 wickets.
India's bowling attack had done well to take 20 wickets against a good batting lineup in mostly good batting conditions, and they know join the West Indies on 1 win from 1 game played.
Arjuna Ranatunga was named Man of the Match for his first innings 182, singlehandedly keeping Sri Lanka in the match during the opening couple of days in a career best innings.
The Indian performance had been very much a team one, and they thoroughly deserved their 21 pts from the match. Sri Lanka had to be content with some individual batting highlights, and a total match haul of 4 points.
