With Pakistan needing a world record 492 to win, or to bat 4 sessions for a draw, they needed a good start.
Once again their top order was awful, as they slipped to 66/4, Cairns again among the wickets and the match seemingly over as a contest.
Javed Miandad and Imran Khan had other ideas.
Starting slowly, they pair gradually picked up the momentum, and eventually feasted on the New Zealand attack, adding a scarcely believable 312 in just 63.1 overs.
Imran was eventually out for a magnificent career best 168 off just 190 balls, while Javed posted a wonderful 183 including 4 sixes.
When Morrison finally broke through and dismissed Imran, New Zealand sprung back to life, and wickets fell steadily as Pakistan edged towards the total.
When Patel dismissed Aaqib Javed, Pakistan were 487/9, needing 5 to win, and it was on a knife edge, anyone's game.
Moin levelled the scores, having contributed a vital 35* at the death, leaving Aaqib Javed to clip the winning runs and give Pakistan a remarkable comeback victory with just 24 minutes to spare.
It seemed all over at 66/4, and New Zealand would feel they should have won from that point.
Javed and Imran had been unbelievable, their innings all the more remarkable given the fact that during the match none of the other Pakistani batsmen reached 40.
New Zealand would feel they got their declaration right, 4 sessions being plenty of time to bowl a team out, with a required run rate of 4 being a tough ask on a 5th day pitch, but the pitch refused to wear beyond Normal meaning spinner Patel never really got into the game.
The pace of Javed and Imran's partnership had been decisive, giving Pakistan time to complete their run chase without at any time having to increase their level of batting aggression beyond normal.
Cairns was bowled into the ground, taking 10 wickets for the match, and deserved better than to finish on the losing team.
Javed Miandad was Man of the Match, having top scored for Pakistan in both innings.
Pakistan claimed 16 points from the match, while New Zealand, having claimed a first innings lead, finished with 11.
