West Indies v England - 1992 World Test Championship - 1st Round - England 1st Innings

West Indies v England, 1992 World Test Championship, Round 1, Georgetown, Guyana

With the fast paced wicket providing value for strokes, England captain Gooch got the England team off to a flyer, racing to 29* not out off 19 balls during the first 4 overs from Ambrose and Patterson.
Walsh and Benjamin put a break on proceedings, slowing the run rate, before Ambrose returned and dismissed Stewart, caught behind by keeper Williams for 18, leaving the score 62/1.
Hick joined Gooch, and they confidently took the score to 109/1, where England would have felt well placed, having seen off the new ball and scored quickly from the outset.
Cue 90's England collapse, Hick departing for 19, then Gooch going for counterattacking 86 off 97 balls at 142/3.
Ambrose and Walsh blew away the middle order, and though Smith scored an aggressive 46, England found themselves at 189/7 at Stumps on Day 2, with two fresh batsmen at the crease yet to score, and the West Indies thinking of a sizeable first innings lead.
The match turned again, as keeper Russell, and allrounder Pringle dug in next morning, adding a patient 93 for the 8th wicket, both going on to post fighting half centuries.
The part time spin of Keith Arthurton provided the vital breakthrough, dismissing Russell for 51 with the total on 272/8.
Phil DeFreitas hung around for a while, but when Pringle was last out to Walsh for 56, England had been dismissed for 319, just short of West Indies first innings total of 326.
West Indies had thus claimed a first innings lead of 7 runs, and more importantly, 4 vital competition Points for the First Innings Lead.
Ambrose and Walsh claimed 7 wickets between them, while Patterson was particularly expensive.
With the pitch still fast paced, West Indies will be hoping it holds it's form at least until they have finished their second innings.
With so little between the two teams on First Innings, it is all to play for as we head into the second half of the match.
