India v Sri Lanka - 1992 World Test Championship - 1st Round - Match Summary

India v Sri Lanka - 1992 World Test Championship - 1st Round - Mumbai

Sri Lanka won the toss, but little else went right for them in a match dominated by a strong allround performance from the Indian team.
Arjuna Ranatunga's superb solo 182 kept the Sri Lankans in the game after the loss of early wickets, but a first innings total of 359 was probably short of par considering the career records of the players in the Sri Lankan lineup.
India replied with a mammoth 623/7, set up by centuries to Azharuddin and Tendulkar in a 5th wicket stand of 242 which took the game away from the Sri Lankans.
It was a total in which everyone chipped in, and at times the Sri Lankan bowlers seemed to have no answer.
An injury to Sri Lanka's best bowler Anurasiri didn't help things, and when India eventually declared, the Sri Lankans required 264 to make them bat again, and to bat over 4 sessions to draw the match.
An entertaining counterattacking 85 to Mahanama, and a fine 130 to Gurusinha kept India in the field, but they received little support, eventually leaving India just 13 runs to win the game.
The 4 Indian seamers all contributed in what was a good effort to take 20 wickets against a good batting lineup on a decent pitch.
Man of the Match was Arjuna Ranatunga for his first innings 182.
