South Africa batted first on a fast paced wicket and were immediately in trouble, losing both openers cheaply.
With the score at 38/2 some rebuilding was needed, and the experienced Kepler Wessels and Peter Kirsten provided the necessary stability, adding 179 for the 3rd wicket to take the score to 217/3.
Kirsten was eventually out for 80, having struck 10 fours in an entertaining knock.
Wessels carried on to 160, though none of the other batsmen got going, with part time medium pacers Gurusinha and Ranatunga sharing 6 late wickets as conditions became Overcast on day 2.
South Africa would still have been pleased enough with their first innings 375, but the manner in which the team relied so heavily on their two experienced batsmen would have concerned them.
With the score 346/6 at the 100 over mark, South Africa had claimed 3 batting points, and Sri Lanka 2 bowling points.
