India v Sri Lanka - 1992 Test World Championship - 1st Round - Mumbai
After winning the toss, and making the slightly contentious decision to bat first in conditions favouring the Swing bowlers, Sri Lanka captain Aravinda de Silva would have hoped his batsman got off to a good start.
It wasn't to be, as Sri Lanka lost both openers, and number 3 Gurusinha to the New Ball, slipping to 27/3, and leaving the vastly experienced duo of de Silva and Ranatunga at the crease with another of their repair jobs needed.
Manoj Prabhakar had a hand in all 3 dismissals to give India the early advantage.
de Silva never settled, but did hang in there, scoring a painstaking 35 in over 2 hours of defiance, before edging spinner Shastri behind to keeper Pandit with the total on 118/4.
He had added an important 91 runs for the 4th wicket with Arjuna Ranatunga to edge Sri Lanka into safer waters.
Strokeplayer Sanath Jayasuriya joined the increasingly fluent Ranatunga, and the pair added a handy 53, before Jayasuriya fell for 28, bowled by a swinging ball from Banerjee.
That left the score at 171/5, with only Ranatunga and keeper Tillekeratne standing between the Indian bowlers and the tail.
Ranatunga was finding free scoring easier than the other batsmen against a steady attack, and soon after reached an impressive century in conditions favouring the bowlers.
With Tillekeratne offering solid support, he pair added a steadying 76* before a Thunderstorm flooded the ground and washed out the remaining play on an interesting Day 1.
Sri Lanka were in a solid position at 247/5, an impressive recovery from 27/3 earlier in the day, with Ranatunga on 124*, and Tillekeratne 31*.
Day 2 dawned brighter than Day 1, with the Overcast conditions clearing, and giving way to good batting conditions.
Sri Lanka marched only mainly under the steam of Arjuna Ranatunga early on Day 2.
They lost Tillekeratne for 45 with the score on 277/5, bringing tailender Rumesh Ratnayake to the crease.
India sensed a quick kill, but it wasn't to be, as Ratnayake dug in, and Ranatunga continued on.
Arjuna Ranatunga was eventually out for a career best 182, having batted in all for 403 minutes and 323 balls, hitting 15 fours.
The last 3 batsmen tumbled for ducks to Prabhakar and Kapil Dev, leaving Ratnayake unbeaten on 37*, but by then Sri Lanka would have been thankful for their recovery to 359 given the position they found themselves in early on Day 1.
The Indian seam attack had been impressive, with youngsters Banerjee and Srinath good early, and experienced campaigners Kapil Dev and Manoj Prabhakar taking over later in the innings.
For Sri Lanka, Ranatunga's 182 had been the only score over 50 in a slightly disappointing performance.
Ranatunga deserved a lot of credit for the relative ease he played the Indian bowlers in an innings in which the other batsmen generally struggled.
At the 100 over mark the score had been 315/6, handing Sri Lanka 3 Bonus Points, and India 2.
