Australia v England - 1992 World Test Championship - 3rd Round - England 2nd Innings

Australia v England - 1992 World Test Championship - 3rd Round - Melbourne Cricket Ground

England needed 206 to win when they began their chase, and with the pitch still Normal had a good chance.
Craig McDermott sent shockwaves through the England camp when he had Gooch caught in the slips, and then yorked Hick, both for ducks in his first over.
Smith soon followed and at 14/3 England were in deep trouble.
Stewart and Lamb restored order with half centuries, and for a while it seemed England might just sneak home.
The all important pitch wear roll at the next break seemed to condemn England to defeat, as the pitch became very helpful to spin.
This brought Shane Warne into the game, and he was simply unstoppable, as he has been for much of the season, claiming 6-40 as the last 6 England wickets tumbled for 7 runs.
It was very disappointing for England, who had dominated for much of the match, only for the wearing pitch to deny them in the end.
Allan Border was named Man of the Match, his 2nd innings of 119 giving Australia enough runs to defend after conceding a first innings lead.
Australia claimed 16 points from the match, and England 10.
