With the pitch remaining good for batting, India started their 1st innings confident of passing the their first target, the follow on target of 311.
They started poorly, slipping to 73/3, before a steadying 64 from the experienced Vengsarkar stabilised things briefly.
When he was out at 193, India were 5 down and 118 short of passing the follow on figure, with Tendulkar at the crease and only the lower order for support.
Tendulkar however compiled a wonderful hundred, and with Manoj Prabhakar posting a maiden Test century, India almost gained a first innings lead.
Allan Border was made to sweat and almost regret his declaration, as it almost cost his team first innings points, but in the end his decision was justified thanks mainly to good bowling by the persistent Hughes.
With the score 340/6 after 100 overs, India had gained 3 bonus points, and Australia 2.
Australia however gained the vital 4 points for a first innings lead.
Shane Warne really struggled, as he had against India in his maiden series in 1992, conceding over 150 for his 3 wickets.
