1992 World Test Championship - New Zealand v Pakistan - 1st Round - Match Preview

1992 World Test Championship - New Zealand v Pakistan - 1st Round - Wellington

Wellington plays host to the 4th match of the 1st Round between New Zealand and Pakistan.
The New Zealand side features a number of allrounders and a long batting lineup, but lacks a world class bowler or two.
Pakistan on the other hand features 3 alltime greats in Wasim, Waqar, and Imran.
This match features the seam heavy Pakistan lineup that played the 3rd Test v Sri Lanka in 1992, with the big 3, and Saleem Jaffer and Aaqib Javed in support.
Strangely the lineup for this Test featured no spinner, while later in the year Mushtaq Ahmed would fill the role with his legspin.
Pakistan would be one of the favourites for the tournament, but as always, feature a number of weaknesses, so this one is hard to pick.

Pitch: 109 - A heavily prepared wicket with little in it for the bowlers. There is just a chance that the wicket may begin to show signs of wear by the final day - but don't count on it. All the bowlers can be sure of is to bowl many overs with little help of success.

Day 1 Pitch: 1 - Good Batting Wicket

Weather: 4 - Cloud, some sunny intervals.

Lineups:

New Zealand lineup:
B.R.Hartland, J.G.Wright, A.H.Jones, M.D.Crowe (c), M.J.Greatbatch, S.A.Thomson, D.N.Patel, C.L.Cairns, I.D.S.Smith (wk), D.K.Morrison, C.S.Pringle

Pakistan lineup:
Rameez Raja, Shoaib Mohammad, Zahid Fazal, Javed Miandad, Saleem Malik, Imran Khan (c), Wasim Akram, Moin Khan (wk), Waqar Younus, Saleem Jaffer, Aaqib Javed

Toss: New Zealand

New Zealand win an important toss, and with the pitch perfect for batting on Day 1 and above head conditions clear, elect to bat first.
