West Indies v England - 1992 World Test Championship - 1st Round - Georgetown, Guyana
With a total of 322 needed to win, and plenty of time to do it, though it must be said, in very difficult conditions now, England set about their 2nd innings.
They were soon in trouble, Stewart falling cheaply for a second time in the match, out lbw to Patrick Patterson for 8.
Gooch soon followed, lbw to Walsh for 7, and with the England captain and first innings top scorer gone cheaply, all hope and fight seem to go out of the England lineup.
Ambrose dismissed Smith, caught behind for a duck, and England soon found themselves 42/5 on an Uneven pitch, and no way back.
Lamb top scored with 20 as England were fired out for 98, Walsh claiming 5-28, and Ambrose 4-18 in a vintage performance.
Though the pitch conditions were difficult, it was fast bowling of the highest class, their performance summed up by the fact that none of the other bowlers in the match came close to matching their relentless performance over both innings.
Lara was named man of the match for his two centuries, revealing a love of English bowling that would come to haunt his hapless opponents throughout the 90's and beyond.
After finding themselves under pressure at various stages of the match, the West Indies eventually ran out comfortable victors by a 223 run margin.
West Indies claimed 23 competition points for their efforts, while England claimed a disappointing 6. After challenging at various stages of the match and putting the West Indies under pressure, particularly with the ball, England would feel their eventual haul of competition points from the match did not reflect their efforts
In the end it proved a vital toss for the West Indies to win, with only their tail late in the 2nd innings having to cope with the very difficult Uneven Bounce, their batsmen had by far the better of conditions.
