Sri Lanka 'B' v Pakistan 'B' - 3rd Unofficial One Day International - 1986/7 - Match Report

Sri Lanka 'B' v Pakistan 'B' - 3rd Unofficial One Day International - Sinhalese Sports Club, Colombo, 26th August, 1986/7

Toss: Sri Lanka 'B'

Pitch: 3 (Normal)

Needing to win to stay in the series, Pakistan 'B' gambled and made changes.
Sri Lanka 'B' were also forced to make changes with an injury to opener Dhammika Ranatunga meaning young opener Hathurasingha retained his place in XI, while Asoka de Silva was welcomed back from his match off with injury.
Meanwhile opening bowler Labrooy was replaced by fellow seamer Wijegunawardena.
Sri Lanka 'B' won the toss, and with the pitch good enough for batting, elected to try their hand at batting first.
They lost opener Hathurasingha for a duck early, but Samarasekera was slow and solid, and Kuruppu aggressive, as the pair laid a good platform for the later batsmen.
The loss of the dominant Kuruppu for a well made 90 at 128/4 stalled momentum and sparked a collapse, as the later batsmen failed to hit out and could only muster a final total of 174 all out off 49.4 overs.
Mushtaq Ahmed claimed 3-31 in an impressive spell, while the 3 frontline seamers grabbed 2 wickets apiece to keep the pressure on the batsmen.
Pakistan 'B' lost Aamer Sohail for a duck in their reply, but Shoaib Mohammad and Qasim Omar built solidly.
Chasing a moderate total, their slow scoring wasn't such a problem as it had been in other games, and when Shoaib fell for 39 a well paced 34 by Ijaz Ahmed kept them up with the rate.
Manzoor Elahi blitzed a better than a run a ball unbeaten 31* with 2 sixes at the end to see the visitors home with 5.3 overs to spare and 5 wickets in hand.
Spinners Warnaweera and Anurasiri grabbed two wickets each, but the other bowlers were dealt with easily in an improved batting performance by the visitors.
Man of the Match was Kuruppu for his aggressive 90, an outstanding innings that would have brought victory on many other occasions.
Pakistan 'B' now claw their way back into the series, trailing 1-2 with two matches to play.
