Sri Lanka 'B' v Pakistan 'B'- 5th Unofficial One Day International - Kandy - 1st Sept, 1986/7
Toss: Sri Lanka 'B'
Pitch: 2A (Dry and Grassless....good for batting)
Sri Lanka 'B' made three changes to the team that lost the last match so badly.
Asoka de Silva was again ruled out through injury meaning an allrounder was needed to balance to side, forcing the recall of Hathurasingha.
Keeper Ashley de Silva returns from injury in place of the out of form Wickremasinghe, and seamer Labrooy comes back into the lineup in place of the expensive Ramanayake.
Sri Lanka won the toss and had no hesitation in batting first on what looked an excellent batting wicket.
Openers Mahanama and Hathurasinghe gave them an excellent start, both maintaining a rate at better than 5 per over as both posted their highest scores of the series.
Hathurasinghe fell first for 53 off 57 balls with the score on 79, before Mahanama stepped up a gear, going on to 78 off 92 balls with 8 fours and a six.
Though the middle order stuttered a bit, a classy unbeaten 79* off 72 balls by Hashan Tillakaratne carried the home team to a series best 263/6 off 50 overs.
Manzoor Elahi bowled well to claim 3-41 off his 10 overs, but he other bowlers were very expensive.
Needing the highest score of the series to win the match and series, few would have given Pakistan 'B' a chance given their form with the bat in limited overs games so far on tour.
A quick start by Aamer Sohail with 40 off 50 balls set the wheels in motion, and the other batsmen gained confidence from his quick beginning.
Mansoor Akhtar took up where he left off last game, scoring at a run a ball and looking in little trouble, while Qasim Omar found his best form of the series.
Often bogging the team down in with his slow scoring in limited overs matches, Omar found the right tempo for a change, adding a superbly paced 156 for the 2nd wicket with his captain to put his team on course.
Qasim Omar was eventually out for an excellent 86, while Mansoor went on to a match winning run a ball hundred.
Though Pakistan 'B' only won the match with 2 balls to spare, they were always just ahead of the required rate, and victory had looked almost a formality once Omar and Mansoor got set.
Hathurasinghe tried hard with 2-43 and was the tidiest of the home side's bowlers.
The Sri Lanka 'B' spinners had a rare off day, going at over 6 per over in a performance that undoubtably cost their team the match.
Man of the Match and for the 2nd replay 50 Over series in a row was Mansoor Akhtar, his match winning innings in the final two games having handed Pakistan 'B' the series.
A rare high scoring match and an exciting chase had been a fitting finale.
Sri Lanka 'B' were left to curse their luck, injuries to key players having upset their momentum after victories in the opening 2 matches had seen them lead the series 2-0.
