India v Sri Lanka - 1992 World Test Championship - 1st Round - India 1st Innings

India v Sri Lanka - 1992 Test World Championship - 1st Round - Mumbai

India began their chase of Sri Lanka's first innings of 359 fairly confident, as the pitch had now flattened out from Dry and Dusty into a Good Batting Wicket.
With Indian opening pair Shastri and Sidhu putting on 100 untroubled runs Sri Lanka used all their resources in an increasingly desperate effort to strike.
It was the part time offspin of captain Aravinda de Silva which struck first, removing Shastri for a patient 58 with the score on exactly 100 after 29.1 overs.
Sidhu fell soon after for 52, leaving the score 116/2 and giving the Sri Lankans a small opening.
A 97 run stand for the 3rd wicket between Sanjay Manjrekar and Dilip Vengsarkar moved India into a stronger position before Vengsarkar fell for 35, handing slow left armer Anurasiri his 2nd wicket.
Manjrekar then closed in on his hundred, before becoming becalmed in the 90's and stuck on 99, he then edged the New Ball behind to be caught off Wickremasinghe tragically one short of his century.
At 263/4 Sri Lanka were still in the game, clinging to hopes of restricting India to a moderate first innings lead.
Crucially it was at this point that Sri Lankan slow left armer Don Anurasiri injured himself badly in the field, and was subsequently ruled out for the remainder of the match.
Anurasiri had peformed an excellent holding role up to that point, bowling 30 consecutive overs from one end in a spell of 2-85, as he kept the scoring to below 3 an over and chipped away with a couple of wickets.
The Sri Lankan seamers failed to strike a 2nd time with the 2nd New Ball, and Azharuddin and Tendulkar slowly but surely began to pile on the runs.
Without Anurasiri to contain and chip away with regular wickets, Sri Lanka were powerless to separate the pair until they had taken their 5th wicket partnership to 242.
Tendulkar was eventually out for 134, lbw to Wickremasinghe, an innings notable for disheartening effect it had only the Sri Lankan bowlers, who it seemed would never get him out.
Indian captain Azharuddin followed soon after for 130, allowing Kapil Dev to join Manoj Prabhakar for some easy batting practice against a defeated attack.
India eventually declared on 623/7 when Prabhakar reached his 50, a first innings lead of 264.
The score at the 100 over mark was 337/4, handing India 3 Bonus Points, and Sri Lanka the solitary 1.
Sri Lanka now face an uphill struggle to avoid an innings defeat on a pitch now offering Low Bounce.
