Australia began their 2nd innings 72 runs behind, and at 59/2 the innings was at the crossroads.
Australian captain Allan Border, sensing his importance to the innings, chose to promote himself to number 4 ahead of Dean Jones and Mark Waugh, as he had done against India at Adelaide in 1992.
The gambit worked, Border holding the team together in a pressure situation with a vital 119.
The other batsmen struggled, with only Ian Healy with 40 offering Border much support in a stand of 86 for the 6th wicket.
Australia were eventually all out for 277, setting England 206 to win, with Dermot Reeve having claimed 5-57, and DeFreitas and Pringle offering good support.
